Career Journey:

Nyein Soe Thu’s journey in the software industry began in 2008 in Singapore. Over the span of 13 years, he honed his skills in web development across various companies, from large corporations to small startups, mastering languages like C# and Ruby on Rails. In 2020, amid the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Nyein moved to Australia. It was there that he discovered LIFELENZ through an agent, drawn to the role of a Ruby on Rails Integration Engineer. After engaging with Dinesh and the team, Nyein was impressed by the product, the technology, and the team dynamics at LIFELENZ, leading him to join the company as his first job in Australia.

Living in Singapore:

Reflecting on his time in Singapore, Nyein describes it as a bustling, fast-paced city similar to Hong Kong. The city's densely populated nature meant that life was always on the go, with little time for leisure. While this environment suited those who thrived on constant activity and convenience, Nyein sought a change, desiring a slower pace of life, which he found in Australia.

Current Role and Responsibilities:

Nyein's current role at LIFELENZ involves a mix of client implementation, delivery, and support. His responsibilities are divided into two main parts:

  • Implementation and Delivery: Before a client goes live on LIFELENZ, Nyein gathers requirements, aligns them with LIFELENZ’s capabilities, and develops necessary integration modules. This phase involves frequent client meetings, requirement walkthroughs, and extensive development work. About 60-70% of his time is spent interacting with clients, while the remaining time is dedicated to development and coding.
  • Support: Once the client is live, Nyein shifts to support mode, addressing support queries and troubleshooting issues. This phase involves less frequent client interaction but requires prompt and effective problem-solving.

Nyein juggles multiple clients at different stages of implementation and support, with his latest project being the implementation for a client in the UK, which posed challenges due to time zone differences and delayed communication.

Projects and Achievements:

Two projects stand out in Nyein’s career:

  • AWS Auto Scaling Architecture: Nyein implemented an auto-scaling architecture on AWS for a Ruby on Rails API, allowing the system to handle varying loads efficiently. This early foray into DevOps remains a proud achievement.
  • Australian Client Implementation : This project involved onboarding over 1000 restaurants in a short period. Nyein and his team optimized slow-running services, reducing processing times from over an hour to just 2-5 minutes, significantly improving system efficiency.

Defining Success:

For Nyein, success is closely tied to client satisfaction. Ensuring that clients are happy with the implementation and the performance of LIFELENZ’s systems is his primary measure of success. Solving clients' problems and making their lives easier is a key driver for him.

Advice for Aspiring Engineers:

Nyein offers valuable advice for those entering the software industry, especially in startups:

  • Passion and Problem-Solving: Ensure you have a genuine passion for software development and enjoy solving complex problems.
  • Seek Help: Don’t hesitate to seek advice from seniors. Sometimes a problem that seems insurmountable can be quickly resolved with a bit of guidance.
  • Adaptability: Be prepared for the fast-paced and ever-changing environment of a startup.

Personal Insights:

Outside of work, Nyein is an avid video gamer, particularly passionate about Counter-Strike. He has been playing the game since 2003 and has even competed in regional tournaments, winning several of them. His dedication to the game has taken him to events like the major tournament at the Fox Theater in Atlanta in 2017.

Nyein Soe Thu’s journey from Singapore to Australia, and from large corporations to innovative startups, showcases his adaptability, expertise, and passion for software engineering. His contributions to LIFELENZ, particularly in integrating complex systems and optimizing performance, underline the high caliber of professionals within the company.
